Mama, I’m a Star

Every weekend, a group of young people gathers in Kota Tua (Old Batavia), Jakarta.  They come from economically challenged backgrounds, living in Jakarta and its neighboring cities such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. Among them are “Skena,” a community that embraces street-style fashion inspired by pop music and social media. They craft their looks through thrifted finds, local brands, or creatively modifying second-hand clothes.

More than just a label, Skena represents a collective identity and lifestyle. Fashion becomes their medium to express individuality, creativity, and unity, pushing back against societal stigma. It serves not only as an aesthetic but also as a means to assert their values and authenticity within their lower-middle-class community.

The Skena in Kota Tua challenge the notion that fashion is exclusive to the privileged. They prove that style can transcend economic boundaries, reflecting artistic ingenuity. Kota Tua becomes their sanctuary—a space for connection, shared meaning, and the celebration of uniqueness.

In a similar vein, “Mama, I’m A Star”highlights how fashion acts as a bridge, fostering connections and promoting acceptance within an inclusive community that embraces diverse perspectives.
